Are you interested in web development?

For any one thats looking at getting  into web development I have some advice. In watching a video today I saw this in the comments…

i want to be a website desinger i am 19 turning 20 this year, i really wanna be a website designer,my brother advised me to go take classes, is it worth it?

I had been in this exact position before, so I left the following response.  I shared with him what I wish others would have shared with me as I stepped into coding.

Yes! Way worth it! I have some great insight give your situation. Im turning 20 this next month.

I was going through the standard 4 year business degree process, and not really liking it. I took an HTLM class (just because I was interested) and I am so happy about it. You should really do it!

Don’t be intimidated by everything, its not only easy to learn but also a very accessible field! You can get a start by doing one simple thing; learn HTML.

I would recommend taking a good class if possible of course. On top of that there we have a great you can get help from. Continue reading

JavaScript – The Definitive Guide – Chapters 1,2,3

These three chapters were dense. The whole book is dense. However it was not all that bad because it was only rehashing what was learned in class. Everything covered was just essentially lexical structure , reserved terms, things of this nature. I would be lying if I claimed to have them down, or even kinda dialed, but reading everything again was a bit unnecessary.  My only good takeaway was how JS used function scope; including functions nested within functions in the scope. I think that’s really cool!

My homework is to make a web site with two popups, each prompting for a name. Then a third popup needs to display these two conjugated. I have the pheudo-code down and understand how to link JS externally. Strangely enough I don’t feel like the code necessary to have a popup that prompts was provided in class of in the reading, not even when a read ahead. Surely I will be able to make due with various resources, but hell what a pain.

Dang!

School is going to be crazy this quarter. For several quarters I tackled 18 credits; this quarter…13 credits. I have never been more intimidated by my classes though, in the first week in my JavaScript class alone I have been prompted to build 4 websites! It looks like I will be busy as all hell for a while here. On the bright side I am extremely excited for all of my classes! For the first time in my web dev program I am actually producing stuff! Granted I did make websites in html previously and programs in python but now, I am actually getting to express my self and ideas in my classes and create dynamic and interesting things! My web design course has been the best so far, it feels almost like a step back to childhood. I’m not saying its easy but that its fun; its like play time for grown ups (that play with code and layouts for fun). Every day in this class we are to “sketch a web” and draw out a webpage. I do that any way! I joked with myself that instead of taking the time in class to draw one up that I would just spend that time going through my notebook to find my favorite to share. Furthermore we also search the internet for websites that we like, which comically is another thing I do often and was actually doing in class with each spare moment I could find In the learning. How amazing when the things you do for fun become “work” and/or “school”. We are even going to be making personal websites and websites in teams for a real client! Nothing easy but a lot fun. I’m excited, bring it on!
